MBMS Knapsack:
Medicines, Nourishments, & Treats
What it Is
The MBMS Knapsack is an ever-emerging field of resourcing, deepening, and healing.
In physical form, it is a curated compendium of quotes, poems, articles, books, videos, films, music, and websites offering inspiration, support, information, and I’m-glad-I-brought-this-along’s for finding our way in these transformational times.
In intentional form, it is packed in service of supporting folks as we are all navigating the rapids, deserts, jungles, and free-falls of living in the midst of collapse and transformation.
In imaginal form, it is a catalyst for evoking and evolving … a kit for crossing a threshold into a new way of perceiving, embodying, and relating in service of co-creating a new story and community of what-it-is being human in a changing world.
"The everyday mystics I grew up with had knapsacks full of spiritual gifts. They could conjure in the kitchen, offer blessed assurance, and braid hair. An aunt or a grandma could shake the dirt from a bunch of beets and transform it into a dish that took you to heaven, even when you don’t like beets. The elders knew how to cure you of your ailments. … The mystics I knew could get a prayer through.”
— Rev. Dr. Barbara A. Holmes
To Engage With the MBMS Knapsack
Let yourself wander.
Respond to what calls to you.
Take your time.
Be with.
Receive … and reflect.
If you are looking for something in particular, you can explore the Knapsack in a number of ways:
Current: Selecting one of the 5 MBMS Currents: Mindfulness / Meditation; Outdoor Engagement; Relationship with Kosmos; Liberatory Healing; Evolution of Consciousness / Spirituality
Tag: Selecting the form that calls to you (book, poetry, music, quote, video, article, website, practice, etc.)
Sort: Selecting a specific title by looking for it alphabetically
Search: Looking for a teacher, author, composer, title, etc. by their name
The MBMS Knapsack is alive; additions are happening as long as Marianne and Cliff are reading, listening, and exploring … which, so far, is forever and all the time.
We welcome suggestions for what you’d like to see added to the knapsack. Just email your thoughts to info@montereybaymeditation.com.
If you’re into sing-alongs, here’s a somewhat bizarre assortment of covers of The Knapsack Song (a.k.a., The Happy Wanderer) for you:
Michelle Sweeny (Traditional)
JB’s Jazz & Blues Band (Toe-tappin’ in Shropshire)
Brave Combo (“Polkatharsis!”)
Louis Prima (“Solid, Jack.”)
The Muppets (“Uh-oh-h-h.”)
Or, just open the knapsack and discover what Medicine, Nourishment, or Treat is just-right-for-you right now.
Blessings on all of our journeys,
Marianne & Cliff

Meeting harm with harm (in individual, familial or collective coflict) does not work to diminish harming. Kazu Haga suggests a response shift that speaks to the roots of harm with a focus on healing: combining nonviolent action with the sciences of trauma healing and the consciousess-shift of spiritual practice. It's quite amazing how much of what is suggested here is happening in a meditation studio near you. :)
