“Somehow everything necessary to work for now
Seems to float like swirls of sunscreen on the
Surface of the pool.
The depth is elsewhere.
May we swim deeply and off script.”
- Nora Bateson, Combining
All who have participated in the courses Eye of the Hurricane, Part 1 and/or Part 2 have an idea of what Nora means when she says “The depth is elsewhere.” Through our self-reflections and conversations, we have accessed a willingness to travel into the edges, knowing that the depth that is needed for navigating this time of destabilization, transformation, and collapse is in unexplored territory, not on the surface of the mainstream.
We have focused on cultivating courage to “swim deeply and off script,” even when there is not a clear answer other than to keep-going, listening for guidance through compassion, wisdom, and justice.
We feel the value of engaging-in-community as a primary foundation of dismantling the delusion of separation. Through ongoing practice, meaningful connection, and authentic relating, we cultivate fierce compassion. We hold paradox and complexity by making space for a widening range of perspective, experience, and culture.
Living in the experience of the challenge of staying centered in these sensings, we come together in humility to share conversations and practice. Sometimes there are tears; quite often there is laughter. Always there is shared compassion, love, and caring. Together, we co-create a holding space of deep listening and mutual respect in service of doing what we can, to the best of our ability, to consciously respond to the tumult of what is happening in the world.
In our gatherings, we engage in self-reflection, pause to settle the nervous system, and, perhaps most importantly, support each other as we learn and unlearn together in service of letting ourselves be changed as we cultivate a new way of being together.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
– Margaret Mead
